Beginner looking into semi-private membership?

Hey guys, been playing now for about 5 weeks, but have played about 3 or 4 times a week. Now that I've invested some money in clubs, not to mention a lot of time into golf, I'm looking for a club membership that I can play on -- both to hit range balls and play golf.
My question for you experts -- what should I be looking for in a club membership? I just got out into the working world and my salary is pretty modest (30k range), so I'm not looking to dump a lot down.
I live in the NORTHERN VIRGINIA area, Ashburn to be precise, and my favorite club near me, Brambelton, happens to be owned by the regional park authority. I believe that means cheaper membership fees. Green fees there cost around $30 I believe.
I called a few places that were $2,000 +, but Brambelton has walking membership M-F, including range balls, for $1,200/year. Obviously, that excludes Saturdays and Sundays, but I feel I could get in at least 3 or 4 rounds a week still, not to mention all the free range balls (that I spend a ton on now at a different, further away range).
Also, this place is 5 minutes from my house. Should I stop considering and jump on that? Should I be looking at different places? Am I missing something I should be asking?
Thanks, this is a great forum!

If you can get out 3 or 4 times a week and already spend a lot at the range, it's definitely worth it. There are other private/semi-private courses in the NOVA area that are waving initiation fees, but the dues are definitely higher than $100 a month. Since the membership only allows free play during the week, you'll get to mix it up on the better couses, sat. and sun. I find that a lot of young club members (especially those who've paid a high initiation fee and steep monthly dues) feel obligated to play their home course all the time to justify the expense of club membership. Brambleton isn't one of the better courses in the area, but since it's five minutes from your home, I say jump in!

not the greatest course, but its exactly what you need as a beginner. its close by, has range balls, and a course you can walk and enjoy. best thing about these types of memberships is that when youre ready to upgrade, you havent sunk any huge initiation fee into the membership.

I recommend looking into South Riding/Pleasant Valley's Dscount Golfer Pass. It's like $300, and you get to hit all the balls you want. You also get one free round, and discounted rounds (like $59) each.
Another option is that several courses are strapped and are allowing you to pay monthly dues and no initiation fee for one year. I think Evergreen, Chantilly, and Stoneleigh are among those. You can call and ask around to see what is available.
If you are still interested in the game after a year, you could consider a private membership. But as a member of a club, I've found that paying as you go is a much better option around here. You get to play different courses and you aren't stuck paying dues all winter when you never get to play for those 4-5 months.

Thanks for all the info and recommendation guys.
I got the membership this afternoon, and it includes unlimited play and range on weekdays at Brambelton, as well as two other courses: Algonkian (Sterling) and Fair Oaks (Fairfax).
Pretty sweet. Thanks again guys.
Ready to get out there and lower that cap!

DuckHook gave some good suggestions, and another one I'll throw out there is Virginia Oaks, I can't picture how far it is from your area, but if it's close enough for you to get there a couple times a week or so it would be a good choice. Much better course than Brambleton and I think they have some pretty good membership deals going now fromwhat I've heard.

Really? That's interesting, I hope they have a better business model this time. They very either very naive in thinking their exclusive corporate only club would work, or just opened at the wrong time, maybe a combo of both. Not to thread jack, but since the OP has already joined the club, maybe he won't mind. What's the deal on Creighton Farms, is is open for play yet, public or private? I heard Ritz Carlton backed out of the deal, so I haven't heard what's happned to the course as a result.

Presidential is now called 1757 Club and is owned and managed by Billy Casper Golf (that's what I've been told).

That's a good deal. I lived in Ashburn a couple of years ago before I moved out to Vegas and worked as a ranger at Brambleton on Sundays so I could play there for free with unlimited range. I was going to suggest that you might want to look into doing that, but I see that you got the membership.
Another good option is to look into Sterling Golf Club which is the executive course. It's a fantastic course to practice short game and during the winter is completely empty. I would play 36 holes walking with no one around and the yearly membership was under $1000.
Westpark is another cheap option for a regulation course, I never liked Goose Creek even though it is closer.

Are they going to be public? Originally they were going to have 36 holes, is that still in the plans.

Hey golfinova (you'll always be NOVA to us not VEGAS) No signs of jealousy there huh Anyway, I think it is public from very little I remember hearing about the new plans. I'd love to check it out if I ever get over that way again after they open up all 18.
Is your Sept/Oct visit still on, make sure and keep us informed via email so we can get a group together while you're here. I think the UMD course will definitely be open by then, maybe JUST for you we could play there.

Won't be open until 2010 or 2011. This is Trump's attempt to get a US Open.

I believe it is still open now and operating under the name of Trump National Golf Club, Washington DC they may have plans to close for renovations, but are still open as of now. He has already made some changes such as adding the Trump name to all the golf carts and such. You're right that he does have dreams of hosting a major of some sort some day there.

CG2,
Even though I'm in Vegas, I'll always have my allegiance to DC It's just nice to not deal with the Beltway out here and of course the year-round golf is always nice
I know initially when it was planned, Presidential was going to be named Bear's Best (or something like that) beings it was a Nicklaus design and they were going to have 18 on the Redskins Park side of Waxpool and another 18 on the Verizon side. Then we know what happened and the rest is history as they say, I was going to apply to work there had I stayed in Ashburn which would have been sweet if they got it finished.
As far as coming out in October, I'm on the fence now. I'm going to send an e-mail to the organizers of the reunion next week to get a count on how many will attend, if it's a low number then it won't be worth the investment ($2k) to come back and rather I'll shift that money to possibly go to San Diego the last week of the NFL season when they play the Redskins, there's also a Caps/Ducks game in Anaheim the night before so it could be a dream sports weekend. Another factor is my wife's work as she is looking to move into getting a dealer job on the strip or a bigger casino that she's at right now.
I would have thought they would be done with the renovations to UMD, I'll definately get back out there to play that again some time in the future.
Once I know more about the October trip, I'll send you a PM. I need to ask some info from you if we decide to come out.
Have a great weekend, we'll talk soon.

Or, let me know where they are waiving initiation?
Thanks!

I believe that Belmont Country Club has dropped their fees substantially, I just don't know the numbers.
I would say check it out, nice area.

GN/GV, I understand about the trip, but keep us posted, you know there are several guys that'd love to tee it up with you that weekend. If you need help on a hotel, send me a PM or email if you still have it. Although the trip to San Diego sounds pretty cool as well, the Skins should be looking for a new coach by then HAAA, I like Zorn a lot but I have a feeling if they don't make the playoffs this year, Snyder will be looking at one of those big names that are still out there. Cowher, Holmgren, Dungy or others.
As for UMD, I think they are done with the renovations this summer, maybe it was longer but C2 (I don't know if you know him) plays there a lot.
Answers:
Meh, I wouldn't mind bringing Cowher in. His style of football is how I like it -- right now Jim Zorn isn't coaching Redskins football.
We'll see what happens this year. I have literally 0 expectations.

That's smart, that way you won't spend late Sunday afternoons, throwing your arms up in in disgust and frustration
I"m not sure what will happen first, the Redskins making it back to the Superbowl or me breaking 80
